What is a Doula?

The word "doula" is a Greek word referring to a woman who has experience in the process of childbirth who provides continuous physical and emotional support for a woman before, during and after childbirth.

A doula...
Recognizes childbirth as a key life experience that the mother will remember all her life
Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.
Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth
Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout her entire labor
Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and helps the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions
Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of her birth experience

Why Use a Doula?

Once you know what kind of birth is right for you, a doula can help make it a reality. While no one can predict exactly what will happen during the process of birth, your doula will provide continuous comfort, support, and information about birth options to both you and your partner.

Studies have shown that women supported by a doula during their labor have...
50% reduction in cesarean rate
25% shorter labors
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in Oxtocin (Pitocin) use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
Increases confidence in the father
Increases success in breast-feeding
Greater maternal satisfaction

Donna:

My daughter Briana was having her first child and I had serious doubts as to whether she was going to be able to get thru it. One of my best friends knew Tery and after meeting her and finding out what Doula's do I was sold. I thought she'd be a big help but I had no idea she works miracles. Briana delivered a 10-pound baby naturally her first birth! The doctors had expected her to deliver C-section but because of Tery's ability to keep Briana calm and help her work thru the contractions she was able to hold out and deliver naturally. I was absolutely amazed at what she did with Briana and I will recommend her to every pregnant woman I know for the rest of my life.
